Benjamin "Pap" Singleton (1809 - February 17, 1900):
Have you ever wondered about the visionary who sought to lead African Americans to a promised land of freedom and self-sufficiency? Benjamin "Pap" Singleton, born around 1809, was a former slave who became a prominent advocate for Black migration to Kansas in the late 19th century. Singleton's dream of establishing independent Black communities aimed to provide economic opportunities and escape the harsh realities of racial oppression.
Benjamin "Pap" Singleton's friends would describe him as a bold visionary, while history recognizes his efforts to empower African Americans through self-determination. Although his dream of a Black utopia in Kansas faced challenges, Singleton's advocacy laid the groundwork for discussions on the importance of economic self-sufficiency within the Black community.
