Activist, Former Black Panther, and Author

Assata Shakur (July 16, 1947 - )

Do you wonder about people who stand up against unfairness, even when it's hard? Assata Shakur, born in Jamaica, Queens, New York, is a former member of groups that fought for civil rights. Her work made her a target during the Black Power movement.

Assata Shakur's story is in her book, "Assata: An Autobiography." She had to leave the U.S. and go to Cuba for safety. She keeps fighting for justice, and her story reminds us to keep going even when things are tough. We're thankful to Assata Shakur for being strong and standing up for what's right.
