Pioneering Historian and Archivist

Arturo Schomburg (January 24, 1874 - June 10, 1938):

What if one man's passion for collecting could become the foundation for understanding and celebrating African-American history? Arturo Schomburg, born on January 24, 1874, was a Puerto Rican historian, writer, and activist who dedicated his life to documenting and preserving the contributions of people of African descent. His extensive collection laid the groundwork for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Arturo Schomburg's friends remember him as a tireless advocate for historical recognition, while history recognizes him as a pioneering scholar and bibliophile. His legacy lives on through the Schomburg Center, a testament to the importance of preserving and sharing the rich history of the African diaspora.
