Late in his life, the Bethel Literary society in Washington, D .C . decided to honor Douglass on his birthday in 1888. the event received a good deal of publicity. According to an account in the Washington Evening star, the event was held in February the way Frederick Douglass found out the year and month of his Birth was by finding a leader of his Enslaver. what was missing from the leader was the date. the abolitionist picked FEB. fourteen as the day to celebrate his birthday. why he chose FEB. fourteen was because of a tender memory he had of his mother, Harriet Bailey. we celebrate Frederick Douglass because he helped give rise to black history month. He was Born February eighteen seventeen or eighteen eighteen-died February twenty eighteen nine five. He wanted to speak for himself, Be his own man, and Be a reader among men.
